1 Hotel Hanalei Bay

by | Aug 20, 2025

We’ve been coming to this hotel for over three decades now (it first opened in 1985), and every time we’re blown away by the views of Hanalei Bay and the mountain peaks that back the bay—honestly, how could you not be? Over the years, the hotel has seen its share of highs and lows, but right now, it’s definitely on an upswing.

1 Hotel Hanalei Bay opened in February 2023. The whole place exudes a laid-back, tropical vibe, which we love. They say their design follows a “biophilic” approach—basically, they weave natural elements into the space to boost guests’ well-being. And you know what? Admittedly, we did feel pretty amazing after a visit—so who are we to argue? Your wallet may feel amazingly lighter, too.

This hotel was redesigned with sustainability at its core—but let’s be honest, we’ve all heard that buzzword thrown around a lot, sometimes with mixed results. Here, though, it really shows. The design incorporates plenty of reclaimed and locally sourced materials, creating a warm, earthy feel with neutral wood tones and soft natural hues. They even line the hallway to the beach and pool with sand, which is a fun (but messy) touch. The once-closed-off spaces—like the lobby—have been opened up to feature lush native plantings and waterfalls. Surprisingly, you don’t get that jaw-dropping view of Hanalei Bay right away—you have to make your way deeper inside. But once you do, the bay completely takes over the scene.

The décor leans into a textured, interlaced aesthetic—think lots of natural fibers, woven woods and wall hangings that bring back a hint of vintage macramé. The rooms keep up the theme with lava rock walls in the bathrooms, spacious stone showers, or deep soaking tubs with separate showers. Beds are ultra-cozy, draped in natural fiber sheets, and the sofas are cushy enough to sink into for hours. Even the glassware is recycled—though wine lovers might find it a bit thick for their tastes. The minibar setup is refreshingly different: You can either empty it for your own use or have it stocked with select goodies. And forget those tiny airplane-sized booze bottles—here, it’s all top-shelf, full-sized bottles. Even the snacks are locally sourced. Plus, rooms come with Nespresso coffee makers and filtered water dispensers.

A fun little touch? The “do not disturb” sign is a rock that simply says, not now, and there’s a mini chalkboard for leaving notes. If you happen to leave behind those red dirt-stained hiking boots (or anything else), don’t worry—they’ll be donated to a local charity.

Got a four-legged travel buddy? They’re welcome, too. The hotel partners with the Kauai Humane Society for their shelter dog field trip program. Little ones will love the Seedlings program, where they can explore sea life, learn about the environment, and get creative with art—just make sure to book ahead, as days and times are limited.

If wellness is your thing, you may never want to leave the property. The Bamford Wellness Spa, the gorgeous pool areas and the massive fitness center make it easy to stay put (though we do hope you get out and explore). There are three pools and three spas, including a peaceful infinity-edge adult pool with a nearby bar and restaurant. The spa offers all the expected luxuries, plus some unique extras—like a float tank, a hyperbaric chamber, a meditation pod, a med spa and even a nutritionist. And the 10,000 sq. ft., 24-hour Anatomy gym is the biggest resort gym we’ve ever seen, packed with every machine imaginable, plus yoga, Pilates and more. Down by the pool, there’s a weight training area made entirely from invasive albizia trees—a creative (and eco-friendly) way to repurpose them. It’s a unique touch that blends sustainability with fitness, and it genuinely looks pretty awesome. Definitely worth a stop, even if it’s just for the ‘gram. Plus, they have a whole list of daily goings-on—some free, some for an extra cost.

Dining here offers everything from upscale splurges to casual bites. Neighbors has grab-and-go breakfast and lunch, plus there’s a smoothie bar, free farmers market, shave ice stand, juice bar, and a poolside spot with a wood-fired pizza oven. For drinks, choose between a laid-back pool bar or a cocktail bar with live entertainment. Prices? Sky high, but hey, who’s counting on vacation?

We gotta say, we really liked this place. Some high-end resorts can feel a little too look-but-don’t-touch, but not here—it’s upscale without the attitude. The staff is genuinely warm and welcoming, the setting is straight-up paradise, and the beach? Absolute perfection. Sure, your wallet might feel lighter by the end, but if you don’t care, it’s worth it.

Rooms are 547 sq. ft, suites are 820–2,400 sq. ft. Most rooms do not have a lanai, but windows and screens slide open fully.
